Is Microsoft Cloud PC Service An Answer To Chrome OS?
Microsoft is believed to be developing two Windows 10X error messages in its Garage that may be introduced alongside the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The error messages are reported to be similar in style and content to the Windows blue screen of death. However, the error messages do not mention the name of the software causing the error as they have been termed as ‘the blue screen of death’. Microsoft Cloud PC Service may launch in June or later this year, according to a latest report by ZDNet. A recent report by ZDNet quoting sources said that Microsoft may launch its cloud PC service by June this year.
This is despite the fact that a recent beta version of Windows 10X was released. Microsoft’s new service is rumored to run Windows apps in the background hence not requiring the user’s attention. Users can then use their desktop for other tasks, with some people saying they find the service very useful. One drawback cited with Microsoft’s new service is that it may be required more attention and CPU usage by the user, especially in comparison with other browsers like Chrome OS and Firefox OS. According to ZDNet’s report, Windows 10X could be launched “in the future” after Windows 10 Anniversary Update v12, which is due out later this summer.
Microsoft Cloud PC Service is rumoured to be an extension of Windows Server Microsoft, allowing the company to share servers with third-party companies. However, a blog post on the Microsoft Blog mentioned that while the company is currently “working on some new ideas for Windows Server, we don’t have anything to announce right now”. They did however provide information on how users would be able to share files using their new service. In the blog post, the company revealed that they are planning on releasing future versions of Windows Server, such as Windows 10 Silver Anniversary, so users will be able to learn about new features of the service and run win32 programs in the background, which is rumoured to include the company’s new cloud-based functionality.
Microsoft Cloud PC Service is rumored to be similar to Google’s Ad-Aware and Safari bookmarking solutions; which means that web pages can be shared between Chrome OS devices and PCs running Microsoft Windows 10x. Although not confirmed, a new cloud-based service could enable customers to run win32 apps in the background again. The rumor came one day after Apple announced that they will not be bringing any more iOS devices to the iPhone 4, following Apple’s decision to remove the app from their new mobile phone. Although not specified, it is assumed that the removal of the application means that the company is either planning to release a new version of the iPhone or looking to replace it with a device that will run iOS apps.
Even though no firm plans have been made, it is thought that the rumour is related to the company’s renewed interest in offering its Microsoft Cloud computing services to the mobile market. If true, this would represent a major shift in strategy for Microsoft, who has until now appeared to be lukewarm towards offering cloud based computing services to the mobile market. Earlier this year, Microsoft’s acquisition of the smartphone maker was announced, but no new phones were released in the run up to the deal’s close. Reports suggest that the acquisition was primarily meant as a means to help Microsoft gain a foothold into the fast growing mobile operating system market, rather than launch new hardware that would directly compete with Android and Apple. It is therefore little surprising to see Microsoft announce yet another browser for its mobile device platform, although no firm details have yet been released.
If the latest rumors are anything to go by, however, it appears that Microsoft Cloud PC Service may be positioned to take advantage of new opportunities brought about by the increasing popularity of multi-platform mobile computing. The aim is to enable business users to access their applications across a variety of Windows 10 devices from a central server. Multi-platform availability of software is seen to be a major advantage of the new service, which would allow business owners to offer their customers a choice of different programs and features. With Windows 10 being the most popular operating system on most mobile devices, this would allow business owners to offer their customers a more flexible and customized experience when they want to run Win32 apps on their device.
